Da Adolfo: A Positano Lunch to Remember
It is so small that reservations in advance are a must.
The Journey by boat
If you ever find yourself in Positano and are lucky enough to snag a reservation at one of our all-time favorite lunch spots, your adventure begins at the docks in front of the Buca di Bacco hotel. Just look for the little boat with the red fish on its mast—that’s your ride to Da Adolfo.
We pulled up to a dock that looked like it had been washed out a few times (but hey, that’s the charm of Italia!). After disembarking from our tiny motorboat—red fish flag waving—I honestly felt like a contestant on American Ninja Warrior, just grateful to make it to the end in one piece. But the reward? Absolutely worth it.
The dock at Da Adolfo
Once we arrived, we rented a couple of beach chairs—8 euros each when we went—and settled in for a swim in the turquoise water, with several rounds of classic Aperol Spritz. Eventually, we were invited up to a table perched above the beach, where we settled in for a lunch I still think about years later.
It is all about the seafood
The seafood was as fresh as it gets, prepared simply so the quality of the fish could shine. I wore a white polo shirt that day, but didn’t care as we dove into a massive plate of cozze in a zesty marinara sauce. The grilled orata was delicately flaky, drizzled with olive oil so fresh it practically glowed, finished with a touch of lemon and a peppery kick from those polyphenols.
One of our favorite discoveries? Caciocavallo cheese, placed on a lemon leaf and grilled. Simple. Stupid. Amazing.
Great fresh seafood, simply grilled, local wine, and the joy of sitting on a rock, staring out at the sea, wondering, “What the hell am I going to do when I grow up?” Bonnie and I still talk about this day, even seven years later. And yes—lemon leaves still make regular appearances on our grill.
A Little Da Adolfo History
Da Adolfo has been serving up unforgettable meals since 1966, making it a true Amalfi Coast institution. This family-run beach trattoria is known for its rustic charm and laid-back vibes—don’t expect anything fancy, just great food and even better views.
Over the decades, Da Adolfo has drawn a loyal following of locals, travelers, and even celebrities. Rumor has it that stars like Mick Jagger and Julia Roberts have dropped in for lunch. We didn’t spot any celebrities the day we went, but honestly, it’s no surprise—Da Adolfo is so special, secluded, and exceptional that it’s exactly the kind of place you’d expect to see a famous face or two.
